Rides Programme; improvement plan example

Here is an example of a simple improvement plan. The focus here is on listing areas that the team can vote on to gain a concensus on the priorities.

Recruitment of new riders:
Seek new opportunities to publicise HCH to recruit and retain riders while promoting the health and wellbeing benefits. Communicate the vision and values of HCH to promote greater engagement in volunteering. More riders implies a need for more ride leaders.

Pathway for riders (e.g. 5 -> 50 miles):
Improve the pathway for riders graduating from coaching. Provide more 5-15 mile rides and more weekend rides. Provide more start locations for Beginner Bike Rides. Beginner, Easy and Improver might be used in ride titles.

Training new ride leaders (RLs):
Existing ride leaders either lack availability or are fully committed in hub activities such as leading, coaching and Wheels4All. As there will be a constant decline in ride leaders a programme to train new leaders is required.

Pathway for RLs:
Introduce a pathway for ride leaders which could start with assisting on beginner bike rides and family bike rides for those with an LCC assistant qualification. This will enable individuals to decide if British Cycling Ride Leader training is right for them.

Mentoring system for RLs:
Provide resources for ride leaders to make getting started easier; for example in navigating British Cycling's processes. Promote a culture of mentoring within the ride leader community which would include a simple mentor listing and round-table discussion of topics of interest to ride leaders. Create a means for Ride Leaders to engage with LCC trained ride assistants.

Ride Leader socials:
Social events for ride leaders to enable more engagement, networking and fun. This can promote and facilitate mentoring. Park Life café may be a suitable venue as it is dedicated (ie quiet) and inclusive (ie no alcohol).

Introduction of LCC-style family rides:
A Let's Ride approach to family rides doesn't work in practice. Using LCC rules, booking and insurance is preferable. A regular park-based ride would be easy to manage with agreement from the relevant park authority. Headstone Park, Centenary Park and Chandos Park are examples.

More mass events (kites 'n' bikes, picnic etc):
People enjoy the opportunity to meetup with friends and fellow riders so more multiple rides with a single meetup point would be well received. Participating in non-HCH organised events will contribute to the wider community and promote HCH.

Please vote on your priorities. It is suggested that you vote for your top 3-5 areas. Some areas are already being worked on, some have partial dependencies and overlap, and all require volunteers.

Tour: Chelmsford to Clacton-on-Sea

This post describes a 3-day cycle tour from Chelmsford to Clacton-on-Sea staying overnight in Colchester and Felixstowe. Just add a start date and book your hotels. Specific timings assume a Monday to Wednesday tour in 2026 so your own train times may be different. An average of 300m ascent over 61km each day on average means this is a relatively flat tour with options to reduce the mileage each day by using the train.    The route makes heavy use of NCN 1 and NCN 51, and if you keep moving on the last day you should have time for a dip in the sea!! Seriously, prepare to enjoy a swim at Holland-on-Sea. Organised Rides

This post lists a number of 'Packaged' bike rides and contains some of the information required to advertise scheduled rides. It can be used to provide some of the text for British Cycling's Let's Ride platform or other sites. If using Let's Ride then have the necessary text, photo and GPX file ready to copy in to their form because at the time of writing the platform can clear some data fields when updating the photo or the GPX file. Separate pages exist for each ride with the information presented as Let's Ride expects.
